American Mountaineer Inspires NJC Students

We have had a couple of interesting speakers visit our campus recently. Mr. John Harlin, an American mountaineer who spent some of his childhood in Leysin, Switzerland where his mother taught school and his father started an international mountain climbing club spoke to our students in early March.  John’s father died unfortunately climbing the Eiger, and then several years later, John undertook to climb the same mountain following the same route as his father. A book and movie were the result of this climb, the movie being one of the most popular films ever to appear in Switzerland. It is called, fittingly, ‘The Alps’. John also trekked the entire border of Switzerland and wrote a blog about his adventures. In order to accomplish this feat, John had to hike, climb, kayak or cycle around the entire circumference of the country. His inspirational talk was appreciated by our staff and students.
