Honouring Mr. Peter Hebb’57

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Peter Hebb, one of Neuchâtel Junior College’s ‘first students’ and member of the Class of 1957. Throughout his life, Peter remained actively involved with NJC and served on the College’s Advisory Board.

In a note to staff sharing the passing of Mr. Hebb, Mr. Keleher, Head of School, acknowledged that: “Peter remained a large supporter of NJC, sending me articles, telling me stories of Leonard Wilde and organizing class reunions over the decades.”

The NJC Class of 2021 had the privilege of his address as part of their graduation ceremony in June 2021. You can watch his address to the Class of 2021 by clicking on this link.

Peter was one of the first alumni to reach out to the Class of 2020 when they were forced to leave Neuchâtel in March 2020, to return home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He wrote about his own experience during his time and told of the risk of his class’s NJC experience coming to an early halt, due to the escalation of tensions in Europe after the Hungarian Revolution.

Peter wrote: “I am able to empathize with your predicament of having had to return home, because of a vaguely similar situation… The Head of School, our founder Leonard Wilde, decided to prepare to close NJC if necessary, and to fly all the students home.  He was able to book seats on British Airways (then called B.O.A.C.) from London to New York, and the families were told to make arrangements from New York to home.”
